Powering & Connecting Tally
How do I connect to power?
Your Tally package includes everything you need to power your device
- A 110-volt USB-A wall adapter
- A USB-A to USB-C power cable
If you don't have access to a wall outlet for your event, you may purchase portable USB battery packs (we recommend 10,000mAh batteries for typically about 8 hours of power) for use with your Tally unit. Please ensure full charge and purchase a backup battery pack for events longer than your battery's life.
- Connect your Tally to your power source: Connect the power cable to the device and to the included 110-volt wall adapter or your portable battery pack (not included).
- Plug it in: If you are not using a portable battery pack, plug your wall adapter into a wall outlet.
- Doesn't quite reach? Use an extension cord or replace the provided USB cable with a longer one (must be rated to deliver at least 2.4 amps of current).
- If you need to use a different wall adapter, ensure it delivers at least 2.4 amps of power. Weaker adapters will negatively impact the device's performance.
- Confirm power: The device automatically turns on when plugged in. Scan the QR code on the device or visit your device management page to view connection and sync status. (Note: To maintain a fully weatherproof exterior, there are no external status lights on the device.)
Optional Wi-Fi Connection
Tally is designed for simplicity. While not required, we recommend connecting to a Wi-Fi network if one is available. For example, in some buildings where cell signal is weak (like convention centers), Wi-Fi connection improves performance. If you do not connect to a Wi-Fi network, your device will automatically attempt to transmit data via the included cellular network.
Follow the steps below to add your network to your device:
- Power your device "on." The device must be "on" to set up a new wireless connection.
- Scan the QR code on the device to visit your device management page.
- Click on your device, then click the "Settings" gear in the top right corner. You should see settings such as zone assignment, Tally mode, and Connection Settings.
- Click "Edit" beside the Wi-Fi Network option.
- Select an available network, or select "Enter Network Manually".
- Enter your network and password details, then select "Connect Now".
- Tip: If you are going to deploy your Tally device in a location where cell coverage is limited, we highly recommend saving the wifi credentials in advance by clicking on the "Save as a preferred network" option. Saving the credentials in advance ensures that when the device is deployed later, it can automatically connect to the wifi network.
Please note: Wi-Fi networks that require a secondary login page, for example in a pop up or browser, after connection will not work to keep your Tally connected. The network must be public or owned without a secondary login.
Confirm Connection
The device automatically transmits data as soon as it's plugged in. It usually takes 2-4 minutes for the device to power on completely. Scan the QR code on the device to visit your device management page to view connection and sync status. (Note: To maintain a fully weatherproof exterior, there are no external status lights on the device.)
If your device is successfully connected to Wi-Fi, the connection will show as "Connected: Wi-Fi":

If your device is connected to a cellular network, the connection will show as "Cellular":
