So here are four things that every destination should measure to understand - and prove - the success of its sporting events.&nbsp;

Visitors don&rsquo;t travel for just a 90-minute game.
They travel for an experience. As stated above, hotels, restaurants, attractions, downtown districts, and local businesses all play a role in shaping that experience. According to&nbsp;<a href="https://skift.com/2026/06/30/world-cup-winners-hotels-bars-ranch/">Skift</a>, Kansas City understood that visitors came for the match, but stayed for the destination. From barbecue and whisky distilleries to sports bars and entertainment districts, the city created reasons for fans to explore beyond the stadium, extending both their experience and their impact on the community.&nbsp;&nbsp;
That's one of the biggest opportunities for host destinations.

Event planners know that putting on a successful event is only half the job.
Once the crowds have gone home, there's another audience to answer to: the sponsors.
Whether it's a downtown festival, concert series, farmers market, or seasonal activation, sponsors all want to know the same thing: Was it worth the investment?
In the past, answering that question meant relying on rough estimates, anecdotal feedback, and a few photos of busy streets. Today, organizers have access to much better data, making it easier to demonstrate:

Consider two very different events.&nbsp;
Union Square's Bright Nights Out transformed one of New York City's quieter seasons into a consistent evening draw, while over in Colorado, Goldens brings thousands of Golden Retrievers (and the humans who love them) to their downtown every February to celebrate National Golden Retriever Day.&nbsp;
These events could not be more different. But together, they help illustrate the five questions that every event sponsor wants answered once the event is over:&nbsp;

<h3>How Many People Actually Visited?</h3>
This is usually the first question every sponsor asks.
Attendance is one of the simplest measures of success. It's also historically been one of the hardest numbers to measure accurately, but the ability to provide sponsors with reliable event count gives them confidence that the event delivered the audience it promised.
Based on previous years, Goldens in Golden organizers expected around 12,000 attendees at the 2026 event, but unseasonably warm weather created the potential for a much larger crowd.
Organizers used Tally by Datafy to measure more than 20,500 attendees across three key zones throughout the event footprint, giving them a complete picture of attendance and reliable data they were able to confidently share with sponsors, community leaders, and future partners.

Attendance totals tell you how many people came, but sponsors want to know when they came, too.
Understanding how attendance built throughout the day, when crowds peaked, and how traffic changed over the course of an event helps sponsors and organizers answer questions like:&nbsp;

Over the 32 nights of Bright Nights Out, organizers didn't just know the event attracted an average of 27,000 visitors per evening. Leveraging Tally allowed them to see that Thursdays consistently delivered the highest attendance, peaking at roughly 37,000 visitors, while minute-by-minute data showed visitation steadily building from dusk through about 6:30 p.m.
Those insights will help sponsors understand when they received the greatest visibility - and help organizers with future programming, staffing, and activations planning.

Sponsors don't just want to know whether people showed up&hellip; They want to understand how activity changed throughout the event: Did the crowd build throughout the evening? Were there strong attendance windows? Did the event give people a reason to visit during a slower season or time of day?
That kind of visibility is going to help organizers move beyond a single attendance number and provide a more complete view of event performance.

Not every audience provides the same value to every sponsor.
Some sponsors may want to reach local residents. Others may be focused on visitors from neighboring communities, young professionals, families, or travelers from farther away.

That makes the post-event conversation much more meaningful than, "A lot of people were there."
